Trip- Jhene Aiko

Rating: 4 Stars

Fave Tracks: Never Call Me, Sativa, Psilocybin

Jhene’s earthy and laid back demeanor really get a chance to shine in her latest project Trip. Her beautiful spirit shines through every track. The album, and especially the cover art have a psychedelic feel. Features include her bae Big Sean, Kurupt, Swae Lee, Brandy and more. Her visual and biography were also released and are very deep and personal. She reveals so much about the death of her brother. This project is well worth the listen. Put it on and just vibe.

Lavender & Velvet- Alina Baraz

Rating: 4 Stars

Although this is only a single, it is worthy of reconigition. You may be used to Alina’s sexy voice of smooth beats such as they song Make You Feel, and this song is no different. All of her music just makes me want to slow wind (🙃). I will be patiently waiting until she puts out her next full body of work!

Fall Watchlist

Fall is in full swing! Red and orange leaves are falling, and the weather is chillier in the mornings. But, the greatest part about this is the new rotation television shows! Here are my Top 5 for this season…

This show is just amazing! I love how they use their air time not only to entertain, but to educate. They address so many taboo topics in a subtle way. Well worth the watch, you will not only learn a thing or two but I guarantee you will laugh more than once!

American Horror Story: Cult

This has quickly become a favorite season of mine. The premise of the show is centered around the 2016 Presidential Election, a true American Horror Story.

The Deuce

Pimp’s, prostitutes, and New York. Who knew that those few elements could create an amazing show. Set in the late 60’s, early 70’s this show is following a few prostitutes, a bar owner, and a few pimps as they navigate through the very gritty 42nd street of New York.

How to Get Away With Murder

The twist and turns that come with this show are unparalleled. Be sure to remind yourself to breath as you watch this show! The question of the season is #WhoKilledWes!?

Scandal is finally coming to an end after 7 seasons. It’s a bittersweet occasion. I’m sure our final thoughts and questions will be answered. The biggest question will be if Fitz and Olivia will finally have their happily ever after!?

Flower Boy-Tyler the Creator

Rating: 4/4

Fave Tracks: Where the Flower Blooms, Glitter, November

I actually loved this album! The beats give me Neptunes early 2000’s vibes. Tyler is known for his somewhat wacky demeanor, but his music has never been wacky. His soulful, sultry beats laced with thought provoking words make him an awesome artist. This album makes me want to hang  on somebody’s patio and just chill.

A$AP Mob- Cozy Tapes Vol. 2

Rating: 4/4

Fave Tracks: RAF, Feels So Good, Frat Rules

Like any A$AP Mob compilation, they deliver. The features are ridiculous! They have all the hottest artist from Big Sean, Frank Ocean, Quavo and many more. The skits on the album give it a great comic relief.

Detroit (2017)

Rating 3/4

I really wanted to see this movie for two reasons, one, I love historical and biopic movies. The second reason was I had never even heard of the murder at the Algiers Motel, although I am very familiar with the Detroit Riots. This movie though fictionalized in some areas was daunting. The scenes with straight police brutality and the tragic murders were gut-wrenching to watch. It was so unfortunate that the events of 30+ years ago seem to mirror the events of today.

5. Rotimi- Jeep Music Vol. 1

Rating: 4/4

Fave Tracks: Kitchen Table, Baecation, Right Here

Who knew Dre from Power could sang!? I was fully shocked and impressed with this collection. Rotimi’s talents reach way beyond acting. He has a smooth, sexy voice. His sexy voice suits his sexy lyrics very well. This is the perfect music for date night with bae😍

Bronzeville: Season 1 Podcast

Rating: 4/4

I gave this series a try because I love Larenz Tate. I will admit it took a little getting used to having no visual to go along with the audio, but there was still so much action and drama that I forgo about the visual after a while. This podcast series was created by Larenz Tate and Laurence Fishbourne. The series is set in 1940’s Bronzeville area of Chicago. The main character, Lucky, voice of Larenz Tate is a numbers runner of the infamous criminal Copland family. The family eventually finds themselves in a criminal war. Other star voices you may recognize in the series are Omari Hardwick, Wood Harris, Tika Sumpter, Tracee Ellis Ross, and more. You can find the series on Spotify. I am now patiently waiting for season 2!

Girls Trips: The Good, Bad, & Ugly

Girls Tip was full of #BlackGirlMagic! The movie is centered in New Orleans during Essence Fest, which is the ultimate girls trip! Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Regina Hall assemble to make the perfect story of  sisterhood and friendship. I laughed, almost cried, cheered, and of course I went to see the movie with my girls!

If you a part of a friend group, you know just how genuine this movie is. Groups of friends can constantly experience ups and downs. Ceratin friends may become closer than others in the group. You sometimes go through rough patches and petty arguments in friendships just like any other relationship. Between careers, kids, and even financial hardships it gets hard to keep up with your friends. Outings become fewer and farther between, phone calls become text messages, and before you know it large amounts of time pass and you’ve missed chunks of each others lives. But, the ultimate goal with sisterhood is to continue to grow together instead of allowing yourselves to grow a part.

The movie truly showcases the importance of sisterhood and friendship. Life throws us numerous struggles, and those struggles become easier to handle with when you have a support group. It is encouraging to have your girls behind you cheering from the sidelines, ready to fight for your honor, or wiping your tears after a disappointment. Girls trips give you permission to pull out that dress and heels you’ve been dying to wear, eat all day everyday, and dance like there’s no tomorrow. It’s an opportunity to relax, drink, be adventerous, and just let your hair down away from your everyday life.

Girls trips can also bring unresolved issues to the forefront. If you and one of your friends attending the trip have had an issue, you better believe it will come out on that trip. Make sure when you agree to a girls trip you have a solid relationship with each person going. Try to resolve any and all conflicts before you leave. The last thing you want to do is spend your money and be uncomfortable for a few days!

It can even bring out hidden personal issues. Someone may get too drunk and suddenly start spilling their guts and start crying. But, this is what girls trips are for! Once you agree to go on a trip with your girls, nothing is off limits! You are allowed to be on your worst behavior! You can look forward to days and nights of endless girl talk, which in essence can be very theraputic and rejuvinating!

I have had my fair share of girls trips. Each time I go on a trip with my girls, I come back with a greater appreciation for each one of them. Girls trips are a way to strengthen your bond all while exploring the world together.

Girls Trip, New Orleans 2016

Girls Trip, Northern Illinois University 2014

Girls Trip, Atlanta 2015

Have you been on a girls trip? Are you thinking of planning one? Which character are you most like from the movie? Tell me about it in the comments!

Summer Watchlist

This summer, my DVR has been recording like crazy. My summer television lineup has throughly kept me entertained each week. Here are my top 5 must-see shows!

1. Power: Starz: Sundays 8PM

At the end of the 3rd season, viewers were left with a cliff hanger as Ghost, the main character, was taken into custody by his ex-mistress  Angela. So far this season has had me  clenching my seat every single season. The fact that Ghost stayed in jail for as many episodes as he did surprised me, but has been making for a very interesting season. There are so many cans of worms being opened from the Lakeisha and Tommy relationship, to Kanan still being alive and nobody knowing about it. The writers for this show are amazing and keep you in pure suspense!

2. Insecure: HBO: Sundays 9:30PM

Insecure has become a hit. I love creator Issa Rae. She is an unapologetic black girl, sprinkling her magic all over the place. It is a show that I can personally relate to on so many levels. The authenticity is what I love about the show. Issa, the main character, is in her 20s and struggling to figure out her career and especially her relationship, or lack thereof with her boyfriend Lawrence. At the end of last season, we were left hanging. Issa cheated, and Lawrence went for revenge. From just the first episode of this season, I can tell we are in for a roller coaster season! I mean look at how the first episode ended! I just hope Issa and Lawrence work through their relationship issues and are back together by the end of the season!

3. Claws: TNT: Sundays 8PM

Claws is nothing like I thought it would be. The show is about so much more than just a nail shop. There is humor, murder, drugs and mystery! Niecy Nash does an awesome job carrying the show in her lead role, as Desna the owner of the nail shop. Initially, I assumed the show would just be about the nail shop, but there are so many layers that give an added twist of suspense!

4. Black Ink Crew: Chicago: VH1: Wednesdays 7PM

Black Ink Chicago is filled with drama, fights, and tattoos! It’s great to see young adults living their dreams, making money, and having fun. Their drama does not take away from their talent. Although it’s a bit different from the New York show, it’s still worth the watch if you are into reality television.

5. Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood: VH1: Mondays 7PM

Of course I can’t make a watch list without my staple show Love and Hip Hop. This season features singer Keyshia Cole and Booby Gibson. Hazel E is wreaking havoc on just about all the female cast members. They have also introduced Alexis Sky, Fetty Wap’s ex- girlfriend. That just screams messy being that Masika, Fetty Wap’s daughters mother is also a longtime cast member of the show. From the previews for the upcoming season, it’s very apparent there will be fights and drama that we see every season and city of Love and Hip Hop.

We have a full line-up this go round so let’s get into it…

Jay-Z: 4:44

Of course I have to start out with 4:44. Now, let me be the first to say this “Tidal release only” has become a real headache but, I understand why the artists do it. That being said…the album was awesome. There was truth and transperency in every song. I’ve even heard jokes saying this is his “Lemonade Album.” That is a fitting descripiton.  This is definitely in my Top 5 Jay-Z albums. He addresses topics such as the infidelity rumors, black excellence, financial freedom, shooting his brother, colorism and black empowerment. It’s an album that will take several listens to fully catch everything. I’ve listened three times now and each times, I’ve heard something i didn’t hear the time before!

Fave Tracks: Legacy, The Story of O.J., Smile, 4:44

Rating: 4/4

2 Chainz: Pretty Girls Like Trap Music

First off, I love the title of this album. I also love the pink cover! But, on to the music…as a whole 2 Chainz always puts out good collective works. I’ve been listening to him since the mixtape TRU Story dropped. He not only makes good turn up songs, but he has decent slow songs on the album as well. He features artists such as Monica, Pharrell Williams, Nicki Minaj, Jhene Aiko and more.

Fave Tracks: Burglar Bars, Bailan, It’s a Vibe

Rating: 4/5

DJ Khaled: Grateful

Between music, Baby Asahd and keeping his Snapchat fans entertained, DJ Khaled is one busy man. I love that he put Baby Asahd as the cover art, I mean look how adorable he is! Khaled has become know for his mega artist albums, and this one did not disappoint. He features artist such as Rihanna, Chance the Rapper, Travis Scott, and many more.

Fave Tracks: Wild Thoughts , Shining, On Everything

Rating: 4/5

TLC is back! Their album was funded by fans who wanted them to make another album, and they delivered. Although Left Eye has been gone for quite some time, they do a good job of keeping her spirit alive. TLC is a group that has shown time and time again that they are still just as relavent now as they were in the early 90’s.

Fave Tracks: Way Back, Scandalous, Start a Fire

Rating: 4/5

Big Boi: Boomiverse

Big Boi gives us his classic southern sound on this album. He has features from artsist such as Gucci Mane, Killer Mike, Sleepy Brown, Curren$y and Pimp C. This album is definitely something to ride around to all summer long. The album gives off blissful vibes and catchy beats. Now all we need is a new Outkast album or an Andre 3000 album…wishful thinking right?!

Fave Tracks: Follow Deez, In the South, Freakanomics

Rating: 4/5
